Woodrow has always been intrigued by what it means to be an artist — as a cultural, economic, and existential being. From early on, he would place his own body within his art works as a way of centring and coordinating their ideas. Self-portraiture has been a regular genre across the years, from his Reined Stick (1972) and Self-Portrait with Grey Hat (1985), through his skull self-portraits of the 2000s, including the forward-looking Self-Portrait in the Year 2080 (2006). His regular collaborations with the sculptor Richard Deacon since the late 1980s have also been part of this exploration into artistic authorship and the early 2020s saw a renewal of this important collaboration, with the creation of an extensive exhibition of new ‘shared’ works on paper.
